Mercedes has revealed the new EQE, another electric car for its new EQ range, at an event just before the official start of the 2021 Munich motor show.
The new electric executive saloon takes on a lot from the EQS luxury car. It'll be a while before you can order one – Mercedes says the new electric saloon launches in the middle of 2022. Until then, here's all the details you need to know.
It really is a smaller EQS, isn't it?
Absolutely. The entire design ethos front to rear is almost a spitting double of the EQS luxury EV, but packages it in a smaller footprint. It's designed to be the E-Class of the electric world for Mercedes, even if the EQE is actually more dimensionally-similar to the CLS (4946/1961/1512 length/width/height). Even so, Merc is at pains to point out that the wheelbase is shorter with shorter overhangs.
Like the EQS (get used to reading comparisons, we can't help it), as standard a portrait infotainment screen that rises upward from the centre console is standard, but can be specified with the new MBUX Hyperscreen – a single panel of glass that houses three displays in one for a big lump of extra dosh.
Regardless of which display you go for, Mercedes says its 'zero layer' interface means you won't have to swipe through endless menus to get to the most used features, there's haptic feedback and augmented-reality navigation assistance.
Any EQE specifications?
Mercedes has unveiled the EQE 350 so far, with more power variants to come later on. The 350 model has a 90kWh battery pack, one motor on the rear axle producing 288bhp and 391lb ft. Mercedes promises a 410-mile range, and up to 170kW DC charging capabilities that allow 155 miles to be added in 15 minutes.
The EQE's variant range will expand to include models with all-wheel drive (i.e. an e-motor on each axle) and CAR expects an AMG version to be released later, too.
What else should I know?
Again, like the EQS, there's rear-wheel steering (4.5º as standard, 10º as an option) as well as digital matrix LED lights. Over-the-air updates can be applied to unlock new features, including sounds while driving, and Mercedes has made a new fragrance specifically for the EQE.
