Background
Hotly anticipated doesn’t even cover it. Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited return to the compact exec saloon fold lands in spring 2016 with rear-wheel drive, lightweight construction and controversial – but certainly head-turning – styling. The Giulia is an important car for Alfa and its Fiat Group overlords. The result of a clean-sheet design and no small level of investment, it needs to be good enough not only to go toe to toe with the likes of the BMW 3-series and Jaguar XE, but also to take Alfa Romeo sales to the ambitious target of 400,000 worldwide sales by 2018. This is a crunch-time car.

60sec road test
It’s no coincidence Alfa Romeo chose to unveil the Giulia to the world in performance Cloverleaf spec. The development team behind the Giulia are talking up its credentials as a driver’s car, with 50:50 weight distribution, direct steering and a rear-wheel drive chassis (with the option of 4wd) derived from the Maserati Ghibli. Intriguingly, a great deal of its structure is made from aluminium and, unusually for a compact saloon, composite materials too. While the Cloverleaf will feature a potent all-aluminium V6, CAR expects the majority of the range to be made up of four-cylinder petrols and diesels with a variety of power outputs, along with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel variant in certain markets. The Alfa Romeo Giulia now comes with a five-year warranty in the UK.
