Background
The Honda Civic is the Golf from the east – a surprisingly edgy design for a Japanese mid-sized hatch (qv Toyota's Auris). Our pick of the range? The Civic Type R hot hatch takes some beating. For more information on the Honda Civic, click on our further stories on the links below.
60sec road test
The latest range cannot match the fireworks of the last-generation Civic, with its space-age looks. The design is toned down here, but it remains a progressive looking thing, with a very distinctive rear end. It's roomy, too, with the usual Honda depth of engineering and durability baked in. We're big fans of the tip-up rear seats, that flip upwards like cinema pews, so you can store a bicycle or tall plant in the rear footwell. Very clever. We're less keen on the humdrum driving experience of the latest hatch, that's neither fun nor class-leadingly comfy. Pick from the five-door or the estate, which boasts an unusually roomy boot. We're keenly awaiting the new Civic Type R, which promises around 300bhp from its turbocharged engine and fireworks aplenty. Better be good...
