Background

The Range Rover has become something of a legend in its own lifetime - for it is the original luxury 4x4. Today it crowns the Land Rover range, bringing a dose of the limousine to the mud-plugging classes. For more information on the Range Rover, click on our further stories on the links below.

60sec road test

Is there a car more closely associated with Britain’s landed gentry? We’re not sure there is. Drive around the monied parts of our sceptred isle and you’ll find few better ways of taking the economic wealth of England’s shires. While Range Rover Sports may predominate in Cheshire and new-monied areas, the real aristos and landowners will surely be found in a Range Rover. And that speaks volumes about its DNA. It appeals to those who’ve already got it all and just want a discrete, practical kind of quality. A high-up, imperious driving position. The ability to drive up your mountain and back on road in comfort. Room for the labradors in the boot and perfect opulence for the family too. It all works, brilliantly. You climb up into a Rangie and the cabin is very high quality (though not without flaws, such as the ageing infotainment and sat-nav). It can feel a little floaty to those raised on a diet of sharp-handling X5s and M-classes, but once you roll with it, the Range Rover is the epitome of high-society transport. We like. If you can afford it, we suspect you will too.
