Ferrari is joining the new World Endurance Championship’s hypercar class. Maranello will enter a car to run alongside the likes of Toyota and Peugeot in the wildest new division of the WEC series from 2023.

The brand has been a long-standing member of the endurance racing scene, with the most recent WEC entrants being 488 GTE Evo racers in the GTE Pro category. Ferrari picked up the very first GT Manufacturers Championship cup in 2017. Looking back even further, it’s been 50 years since the brand last officially took part in the top class of the World Sports Car Championship in 1973.

‘With the new Le Mans Hypercar programme, Ferrari once again asserts its sporting commitment and determination to be a protagonist in major global motorsport events,’ said Ferrari chairman, John Elkann.

CEO of FIA’s WEC, Frédéric Lequien, added ‘Ferrari is a prestigious marque which is synonymous with Hypercar, so I have no doubt that they will be extremely competitive out on track - we are honoured to welcome Ferrari back to the top class of endurance racing.’

We’ll find out more details soon, inevitably, including what Ferrari’s new hypercar will look like.
